The School of Mathematical Sciences traces its roots to the Department of Mathematics under the College of Science. Since its establishment, the Department has made continuous progress in discipline development, faculty building, and talent cultivation. Applied Mathematics was approved as a second-level master's discipline in 2006, and Mathematics was approved as a first-level master's discipline in 2019. The Institute of Operations Research and Systems Engineering was established in 2021, followed by the Institute of Signal Processing and Machine Learning in 2023, further strengthening the research platform. In 2024, Mathematics was approved as a first-level discipline authorized to confer doctoral degrees, marking a major milestone in its development. In April 2026, the School of Mathematical Sciences was formally established, opening a new stage of independent and systematic development for mathematics at the University.
The school currently offers an undergraduate program in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, which has been recognized as a featured and first-class undergraduate program in Tianjin. The school has 66 full-time faculty members, including 16 professors, 14 associate professors, 12 PhD supervisors, and 28 master's supervisors. Supported by a steadily growing discipline and a dedicated faculty team, the school has cultivated a large number of outstanding graduates.
In teaching, the school is responsible for public mathematics courses across the university and is committed to high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate education. Over the years, it has developed a well-established teaching system, several high-level teaching teams, and a number of first-class courses. Faculty members receive teaching awards at the university and municipal levels every year.
In research, the school has developed several stable research areas, including Functional Analysis and Applications, Combinatorics and Optimization, Nonlinear Analysis and Differential Equations, and Wavelet Analysis and Applications. Over the past five years, the school has undertaken more than 40 national and provincial/ministerial-level research projects, carried out over 40 industry-sponsored collaborative projects, and published nearly 200 papers in high-level journals and conference proceedings.
The school places great emphasis on student development and practical training. Its postgraduate admission rate ranks among the highest at the university. Many graduates have continued their studies at leading universities in China, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Nankai University, and Tianjin University, as well as internationally renowned institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley (USA), King's College London (UK), the University of Edinburgh (UK), and Lund University (Sweden). Graduates pursue careers in a wide range of fields, including education, research, industry, and finance.
The school actively promotes international exchange and cooperation. It has hosted a number of international academic forums and conferences. Nearly 20 faculty members have overseas study or research experience, and maintain close academic connections with scholars in China and abroad through academic visits, collaborative research, and international conferences.
